To Kalon
Cabernet
In 1993, Beckstoffer Vineyards purchased 89 acres of the historic To Kalon Vineyard located in Napa Valley’s Oakville district. The parcel, formerly Beaulieu No. 4, was part of the original 359-acre vineyard first planted in 1868 by viticultural pioneer H.W. Crabb (Mondavi and U.C. Davis own the remaining acres). It has been producing some of the Napa Valley’s best red grapes ever since. Beckstoffer replanted it from 1994-97 (after phylloxera) to multiple clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc with modern trellising and closer vine spacing. The vineyard produces several luxury vineyard-designated wines.
The name To Kalon means "the beautiful" in Greek, but Crabb has joked, “I try to make it mean the boss vineyard.” Crabb's take on the name is well suited for the vineyard, which has a long history of producing the grapes that are made into some of California's most celebrated wines.
