When B Cellars’ founders Duffy Keys and Jim Borsack first met in Southern California in 2002, both were executives in the luxury business: Jim with El-Portal designer leather goods and Duffy with the Four Seasons Hotels. Soon thereafter they discovered they were on parallel missions to acquire vineyard property in the Napa Valley and forge new paths in their careers.

In the spring of 2003, they scrapped their former careers, formed B Cellars, and became committed to structuring a first-rate wine company predicated upon two absolute principles: first, to produce exceptional artisan wines, season after season and second, to develop distinct flavors by blending wines from mutually complementary varietals.

The B Cellars name and logo stand for a commitment to perennial excellence. The letter ‘b’ and the degree symbol º refer to brix, a viticultural term which defines the optimal sugar/alcohol content in grape juice indicating the wine’s potential for greatness.

B Cellars is committed to the artisan approach, creating perfectly balanced and complex wines. We are confident you will enjoy them and be proud to share them with friends and family.

B Cellars Master Winemaker

Farming and winemaking is in the blood of B Cellars Winemaker Kirk Venge, “When I was growing up, working in the vineyard and winery gave me a wonderful sense of partnership in my family’s way of life; it was hard work, but I loved it.” Born and raised in Rutherford, Napa Valley, surrounded by fabled vineyards and wineries, Kirk was instilled with his father’s Nils vision of excellence and learned the rhythm of winemaking as a young man, helping in the family vineyard throughout the growing season, experiencing the labor of harvest and the love of crush, and working alongside his father in the winery. Some of his earliest memories are of riding on the tractor with his father cultivating the Oakville Estate vineyard and dragging hoses across the cellar floor.

At B Cellars since its inception in 2003, Kirk’s unmistakable commitment to his craft is apparent. He works hand-in-hand with all of the vineyards with which B Cellars has become aligned and is instrumental in the company’s overall winemaking operation by employing a multi-vineyard strategy and developing distinct flavors by blending wines from mutually complementary varietals.

His deep family roots in viticulture and his passion for the industry that ensued led him to be named one of the top twenty young winemakers in the world by Food & Wine magazine. Kirk’s heritage, love for winemaking, and unparalleled paternal tutelage have all provided him with a foundation bound for success in the wine industry.

Kirk worked diligently during summer internships as the experimental winemaker at Mumm where he focused on still Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Post-graduation he worked harvest in New Zealand and time spent in Europe that provided him the skills to take over the production of Venge Family Wines in 2003.  Kirk is a graduate of the University of California at Davis with a Bachelor of Science degree in Viticulture and Enology.
