2023 Sugarloaf Vineyard Merlot
The 2023 growing season was notably cool, characterized by consistent temperatures that contributed to a prolonged harvest. The long, temperate growing season allowed the grapes to develop lush, ripe fruit flavors—think black cherry, plum, and raspberry—while cool nights preserved freshness and acidity, keeping the wines vibrant and balanced with plush tannins. Few vineyards showcase this more than Sugarloaf Vineyard. Creating wines that embody remarkable depth and elegance, and a harmonious balance between power and grace. Nestled on the rugged hillsides of Napa Valley’s southeastern edge, Sugarloaf Vineyard provides a breathtaking view of San Pablo Bay with elevations soaring over 1,000 feet. The southwest exposure embraces the warmth of the late afternoon sun, and the rocky basaltic soil captures and holds heat. This is balanced by gentle afternoon breezes that sweep inland, cooling the sun-kissed slopes, allowing grapes to ripen to perfection.
Merlot is one of the world’s most popular red wine varietals, although it is often overshadowed by its half-sibling, Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot vines thrive in the Napa Valley because of our region’s unique terroir. At B Cellars, Merlot is one of our favorites due to its versatility, both in the winemaking process and on the dinner table.
2023 Sugarloaf Vineyard Merlot
A bountiful nose full of character exhibiting fruit aromas of fig, plum, and blackberry pie filling. As it opens, there are hints of black tea and candied orange peel. A bright and lively palate bursts with pluot, nectarine, black cherry, raspberries, and bramble berry. Classic barrel notes balance the fruit; cinnamon, vanilla, and a touch of chocolate-covered espresso beans. The brightness of this wine is balanced by plush tannins that are present throughout.
