Frediani Petite Sirah

Petite Sirah originated in France, known as Durif, but gained popularity in California, where the growing conditions were more suitable for the varietal. Despite its name, there is nothing particularly petite about its character. The word “Petite” refers instead to the grape’s compact berries, which create a naturally high ratio of skin to juice. Petite Sirah is celebrated for producing deeply colored, full-bodied wines with concentrated dark fruit, firm tannins, and exceptional aging potential. The varietal is particularly well-suited to warm growing regions, where it can achieve full flavor development and generous ripeness.

Our Petite Sirah comes from the historic Frediani Vineyard, located in the esteemed Rosedale–Pickett Road area of northeastern Napa Valley. Situated near the base of the Palisades, this distinctive site reflects the remarkable geological diversity of Calistoga. The vineyard encompasses a wide range of soil types, from the deep, well-draining Pleasanton gravels found at higher elevations to the richer, heavier Bale clay loam that extends toward the Napa River. These varied soils influence the vines in different ways. The gravelly sections provide excellent drainage and encourage the roots to reach deep into the earth, contributing to the fruit’s intensity and concentration. The clay-rich soils retain moisture and support steady development throughout the warm growing season, adding richness, density, and texture.

The Frediani family has farmed this land for three generations, developing an intimate understanding of the vineyard and its many individual blocks. Their experience, combined with Calistoga’s warm days, cool foggy nights, and diverse soils, produces Petite Sirah with extraordinary color, flavor, and depth. It is a wine that expresses both the natural power of the varietal and the singular character of its vineyard. A bold, yet balanced reflection of one of Napa Valley’s most distinctive growing regions.

2024 Frediani Vineyard Petite Sirah

There is an expressive bouquet of blackberry, blueberry compote, and black plum, layered with notes of violet, graphite, and warm baking spice. Rich and concentrated on the palate, the wine delivers generous dark fruit framed by firm, finely textured tannins and a vibrant thread of acidity. Subtle notes of cocoa, espresso, and crushed stone add depth, leading to a long and structured finish.
