Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard Cabernet Bottle

2018 Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard

Cabernet Sauvignon

Planted to vineyards for over 150 years, Beckstoffer Las Piedras traces its history back to the original Mexican land grants. In the 1840’s European settler Edward Bale planted the property, a wedding gift from General Vallejo, to Mission grapes. It became the first vineyard planted in what is now the St. Helena appellation and saw the first wine varietals planted in 1860. In 1983 Beckstoffer Vineyards purchased the property and planted it to two clones of Cabernet Sauvignon. Impressed with the quality of the gravelly soil, the farmworkers named the vineyard Las Piedras, which means “little pebbles”.

Intrigue builds almost immediately with a deep, dark-purple color taunting any light to escape. The nose is enticing – notes of pure cocoa powder and cedar swirl around aromas of blueberry, plums, and currants. Seductive flavors of blackberry and dark chocolate persist on the palate and a prominent minerality (pebbly, gravelly soils) adds to a dense and rich texture. Fine-grained tannins give a firm, earthy finish.

Bold, rich flavors of currants, blackberries, and dark cherries blend with mocha and the characteristic earthy “Rutherford Dust” undertones. It finishes with a sturdy structure, mildly chewy tannins, and elegant harmony.

A portion of the original vineyard was purchased by Beckstoffer Vineyards in 2010. Planted with head-trained, old-growth Petite Syrah and various clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, the Beckstoffer Bourn vineyard is the newest Heritage vineyard.

An inky monster of a wine; deep purple color with a garnet rim. The aromas pour out. – lots of boysenberry jam, cocoa, eucalyptus and mission fig; some exotic spice follows and accents the fruit wonderfully. The palate is rich – Kirsch, pencil shavings, pipe tobacco, black cherry and herbs de provence; the tannins are young, but, meet the fruit right in the middle. There’s no mistaking this wine emanates from a Beckstoffer vineyard. We expect the wine the wine to age gracefully for many years to come – however fans of California fruit will want to drink this early.

2018 Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper Vineyard

Cabernet Sauvignon

Missouri Vineyard has become synonymous with world class wine. This historic heritage vineyard is found in Oakville and is owned by Andy Beckstoffer who has carved his reputation upon his appreciation for meticulous farming and movement toward sustainability. This special vineyard is located on the western aluvial fan just north of the town of Yountville. The soil type moderately deep alluvial silty clay loam. The vine’s roots struggle to find water causing them to burrow deep into the earth producing grapes with layered, concentrated and balanced flavors. Oakville has a long- standing reputation for producing cellar worthy wines of incredible character.

Profound, there’s much happening at once. Deep, dark and extracted – it looks viscous. Kirsch wafts off of the top of the wine, it’s got a Pauillac character that resonates immediately. Currants, cherry liqeur, Kona coffee, are all immediately evident. The first sip is a bit tense – it will take time before this beauty relaxes. Full of blackfruits, some sweet anise, cocoa and cherry cola all dominate the palate. The tannins are velvety smooth and play nicely with the fruit.
