2022 Blend 24

Our Version of the Super Tuscan – a wine that broke the mold

Blend 24 finds its inspiration from Italy’s unofficial star—the “Super-Tuscan”, where grape varietals that were not indigenous to Italy were blended together to produce new expressions of classic terroir. These wines started gaining popularity in the early 1970s, and the term “Super Tuscan” was coined in the early 1980s. These wines started turning heads in Italy and worldwide as winemakers started noticing wines that didn’t fit into tradition!

In our case, we blend the Napa Valley classic Cabernet Sauvignon with Sangiovese, a rare grape in our parts. Merlot is added for a soft, round mid-palate, while a touch of Petite Sirah contributes color and depth. There is a great effort taken to age this wine in the correct ratio of oak so as not to impact the Sangiovese’s wonderful bright notes but enough cooperage to meld the firm tannins of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah.

The wine boasts an expressive nose of blackberry, star anise, dried florals, boysenberry, and espresso foam. On the palate, the feminine bright red fruits of Sangiovese are balanced with black fruit from the Cabernet Sauvignon. Cocoa powder, candied cherries, and cranberry are layered and long-lasting. The light dusty tannins create a pleasant mouthfeel, and the bright acidity adds a refreshing lift to the finish.

In the Kitchen

“Blend 24 may be the most versatile food-pairing wine that we make,” says Chef Derick. The delicate balance of bright fruit from the Sangiovese blended with rich Cabernet Sauvignon goes well with any Italian dish. Here are his top three suggestions!
