The 2025 vintage is officially underway! April ushered in Bud Break throughout most of the vineyards we work with (a couple broke in March), and those buds have given way to shoots as the vines convert plentiful groundwater and sunshine into strong shoots, canopies, and soon, flowering clusters. We are all hoping for a mild May and consistent weather before the dry heat of summer sets in.

Great wines come from great vineyards. And great vineyards have healthy and vibrant soils. Protecting and preserving these healthy soil ecosystems for future vintages is fundamental to stewarding the unique terroirs of the Napa Valley. In other words, sustainability is part and parcel to great winemaking. April, with its explosion of new growth and greenery, reminds us to reflect on our stewardship and on the ways we practice sustainability in the vineyard, in the cellar, and in our overall business practices.
Responsible Stewardship
The B Cellars estate has a rich history. Before becoming a winery, this beautiful property was a horse farm up until 2014. In the years since, we’ve transformed it into the thriving vineyard and winery it is today, while honoring its past and making sure it thrives for future generations. Sustainability has been a guiding principle in every step of this transformation—ensuring that the land remains healthy, the soil fertile, and the wildlife at home.

No Landfill Needed
Even where we’ve made significant strides in lessening our impact on the environment, we continue to seek out thoughtful, environmentally conscious choices. Beginning this month, we are proud to begin using BioDrain ice-packs in our shipments. The gel is made with FDA GRAS biodegradable materials and is 99% water. It is non-toxic and can safely be poured down the drain, leaving the outer film to be recycled. This means that every part of our shipping package can be disposed of through recycling or composting. These changes reduce our footprint without compromising the quality and care we put into every shipment.
HINT: Our biodegradable insulation used in shipping packages is a magnificent starter material for your charcoal BBQ’s. Just rip a few pieces off, embed in your charcoal or place underneath your charcoal chimney and light.

Commitment and Accountability

In 2023, we proudly became a Napa Green Certified Winery and Vineyard, a distinction that recognizes our comprehensive efforts in water conservation, energy efficiency, and environmental stewardship. These certifications reflect more than compliance—they represent a deep respect for the land and a hands-on approach to responsible farming and production.
Wildlife and Biodiversity
Our estate is a living, breathing example of this philosophy. We use no-till farming practices to protect the soil’s health and structure, and we maintain wildlife corridors to ensure the land supports a wide variety of local species. Owl and kestrel boxes encourage these natural predators to make the vineyards home and act as natural pest control. Bluebird boxes attract a healthy population of insectivores, eliminating our need to use chemical repellents in the vineyards and gardens. Our culinary gardens, chicken coop, and apiary provide fresh ingredients for our tasting experiences, support local pollinators, and contribute to the biodiversity of our property. It’s a holistic ecosystem that enriches both our wines and our environment. We have been lucky to witness wild turkey, bobcats, and coyote packs traveling through the property, proving that our efforts are helping achieve a balanced ecosystem.
Shared Responsibilty
Our sustainability commitment extends to our valued partnerships. At Beckstoffer Vineyards, where we source some of our most prized fruit, grazing sheep are used to manage cover crops naturally—an effective and eco-friendly alternative to mechanical mowing. Because these sheep are raised at Beckstoffer headquarters in Rutherford, the need to transport them to each vineyard is severely lessened. Beckstoffer has also adopted a fleet of electric Monarch tractors, reducing emissions and fossil fuel usage in the vineyard. These forward-thinking practices align with our own vision for a more sustainable Napa Valley.
At B Cellars, sustainability is not just a commitment—it’s a mindset that touches every part of our winery, from vine to bottle. It’s about more than responsible practices—it’s about stewardship, innovation, and integrity. We believe the best wines come from a healthy, thriving environment, and we are dedicated to preserving the land we love so it can continue to flourish for generations to come. We’re committed to building a future where great wine and great care for the planet go hand in hand.
