At The Winery
The weather is warming up and everywhere you look there are signs of summer. The oak and walnut trees on the hills are full of green leaves, ready to offer shade underneath their canopies. The culinary garden is growing rapidly and starting to offer the first bounty. In the vineyard, the vines are growing vigorous shoots and developing broad leaves and canopies that will provide shade for the grape clusters later in the summer.
Most importantly, the vines just completed the flowering phase of the growing cycle. Yes, grapevines have flowers and while it’s not a dramatic explosion of color or sweet aromas, it is a vital step in determining what kind of vintage it will be. The vines self-pollinate which then leads to the formation of grapes. This is yet another delicate time in the growing cycle. Weather events such as heavy wind, rain, or even hail can damage the flowers and prevent pollination. This can lead to incomplete clusters, known as shatter, or even worse, the potential cluster could be destroyed entirely. Luckily, it’s been an uneventful month weather-wise so we feel good about how the 2023 vintage is progressing.
It’s shaping up to be a great summer in Napa Valley and we’d love to see you in Oakville! Give our concierge team a call to book your reservations and don’t forget to follow us on Instagram and Facebook to keep up with everything happening at B Cellars.
